What happened to losing?

Neil Swidey writes a good article exploring competition.

Take a read through.  Some key points from the article about good competition:

  • Participation is voluntary
  • Teams are set up so everyone has a reasonable chance of winning
  • The importance of winning is relatively minor, so that 10 minutes after the game who won and who lost can barely be remembered
  • The rules are clear and fair
  • Relative progress can be monitored
  • Competition is "to strive with."   The best competition is when both competitors best comes out.

MYSA Winter Symposium

Recently, MYSA sent 10 coaches to the MYSA Winter Symposium.  Presentations covered a variety of topics that ranged from U5/U6 Rec players to functional play of different groups at the competitive levels.

Andrew Seidel was one of the attendees who took particular note of two sessions.  A session on motivation by Dr. Bhalla from the University of Minnesota and John Curtis, MYSA's Director of Coaching who did a session on the combination play between central midfielders.

To the right are Coach Andy's notes from the motivation session and a practice plan he recently used with his team based upon the midfield session obsereved.
